"ruff cuts" is a (more) inclusive west coast community sound collage prioritizing non-judgemental sharing, unapologetic first takes, and a commitment to reconsidering the markers of "skill" and "talent" used to gatekeep within both traditional diy and commercial art organizations. the original prompt was to share three days of unfinished creative process, which by the end included a wonderful array of craigslist poems, voice memos, passed-down family recipes, wizard doodles, and fan art! (for the digital archive, see the #nasturtiumbenefit hastag on instagram.)

at the end of the three days, we expanded the prompt to include any "ruff" ideas or unfinished material, from absolutely anyone who had a desire to share, with the goal of thinking a little more critically about our prioritization of hi-fi digestibility and narratives of "finished" and entirely singular digital artifacts when consuming music. we wanted songs with missing verses! we wanted unsent letters! we wanted terrible recording of wonderful music, or terrible recordings of terrible music, or anything that anyone wanted to share but did not have an outlet to do so :~)
